Safety cameras helping to save lives and money

Scotland’s Chief Statistician today announced the release of Key Scottish Safety Camera Programme Statistics 2010. This report shows that the average number of people killed or seriously injured at safety camera sites between 2008 and 2010 is 63 per cent lower than the three-year baseline averages recorded since the start of the programme.   Access the bulleting using this link: http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Statistics/Browse/Crime-Justice/SafeCam

Country Roads:

During 2004-08, 629 people have been involved in fatal and serious road casualties on country roads, in Fife alone and across the country:-

  • 3 out of 4 fatalities happen on country roads
  • 55% of cases where people have been killed or seriously injured - inappropriate speed has been a factor and the 2 most common causes are loss of control and inappropriate speed (travelling too fast for the conditions or exceeding the speed limit).

Fife Safety Camera Partnership aim to intensify deployment on routes in and around country roads in a bid to support the national campaign.  For further information click here to access the 'Don't risk it' website.

Section 172  of the Road Traffic Act, 1988 :   it is the responsibility of the Registered Keeper to know who is driving the veicle at all times.  FSCP aim to assist the keeper in identifying the driver if possible.  However, the onus lies with the registered keeper and a fine of £1000 and 6 penalty points can be applied if the information is not presented.

Other usefull information:

Quick facts:

  • The revenue from fines goes directly to HM Treasury.
  • The Partnership is grant funded from the Scottish Government for the sole purpose of casualty reduction.
  • Where continuous review shows a sustained improvement on the casualty rate a site will be removed from the deployment matrix.
